OpenRouter integration with Make.com enables seamless access to multiple AI models within your automation workflows, including both paid options like Claude and GPT-4, as well as free alternatives such as Llama and Gemini. This integration not only provides flexibility in model selection but also implements automatic fallback mechanisms, making your automations more resilient against API errors.
By utilizing OpenRouter instead of direct API connections, you can easily switch between different AI models without extensive scenario modifications, while benefiting from intelligent error handling and automatic retries.
In my video, I demonstrate how to integrate OpenRouter with Make.com and explain its advantages over direct API connections:
Setting Up OpenRouter
To get started with OpenRouter, visit openrouter.ai and sign in using either email or Google authentication. After creating your account, you’ll need to add credits to begin using the service. The pricing structure matches direct API calls, with OpenRouter adding a 5% fee plus a $0.35 service charge on top-ups.
Creating API Keys
Navigate to the Keys section and create a new API key specifically for Make.com. You can optionally set credit limits for better resource management. This API key will be used to establish the connection in Make.com.
Make.com Integration
Within Make.com, search for the OpenRouter module and select “Create a Chat Completion.” Create a new connection using your API key, then configure your messages with system and user roles as needed.
Model Selection and Fallback Options
One of the most powerful features is the automatic fallback capability. You can enable this option to automatically try alternative models if your primary choice fails. Configure your default fallback model in the settings, such as GPT-4 or other compatible options.
Using Free Models
OpenRouter provides access to several free models, including Google Gemini and Llama variations. You can filter models by pricing and select free options for cost-effective automations. The response format remains consistent across different models, making it easy to integrate into your workflows.
Additional Features
OpenRouter supports adding your own API keys from providers like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Perplexity. This feature is particularly useful if you have existing credits with these providers. For more advanced implementations, you can enable JSON mode in the advanced settings for structured outputs.
You can access all of our Make.com templates and additional resources through our community platform, where you’ll also find weekly workshops and direct support for your automation needs.
